Highly sensitive children possess a heightened sensitivity to stimuli, both external and internal, which profoundly impacts their emotional experiences and interactions with the world around them. This sensitivity is not a flaw but rather a natural aspect of their temperament that requires understanding and validation.

Characteristics of Highly Sensitive Children:

  1. Emotional Depth: Highly sensitive children often experience emotions with great intensity, feeling joy, sadness, and everything in between more profoundly than their peers.
  2. Sensory Sensitivity: They may react strongly to sensory stimuli such as loud noises, bright lights, and rough textures, which can easily overwhelm their nervous systems.
  3. Empathy and Compassion: Highly sensitive children possess a deep sense of empathy and compassion, often feeling deeply affected by the emotions of those around them.
  4. Perfectionistic Tendencies: They may hold themselves to exceptionally high standards and become easily frustrated when they fall short of their own expectations.
  5. Need for Predictability: Highly sensitive children thrive in environments that are calm, structured, and predictable, where they feel safe and secure.

Support Strategies for parents:

  1. Validation: Validate the emotions and experiences, affirming the validity of their feelings even if they seem disproportionate to the situation.
  2. Psychoeducation: Educate children about the concept of high sensitivity, helping them understand that sensitivity is a natural and valuable trait.
  3. Coping Skills: Teach children coping strategies for managing intense emotions, such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery.
  4. Emotional Regulation: Help children develop skills for regulating their emotions, such as identifying triggers, practicing mindfulness, and expressing themselves through creative outlets.
  5. Self-Compassion: Encourage children to practice self-compassion and self-care, emphasizing the importance of taking breaks, setting boundaries, and engaging in activities that bring them joy.
